Hong Kong Fertility Preservation Workshop 2025: An activity under the Sanming Project of Medicine, Shenzhen

The first day of workshop commenced with a warm welcome address by Prof. Ko Ka Yee Jennifer, setting the stage for an engaging program.

 

Session One explored the evolution and modern practices of ovarian tissue cryopreservation. Prof. Anderson Richard provided an insightful overview of its history and current status, followed by Prof. Rodriguez-Wallberg Kenny, who discussed slow freezing techniques. Prof. Takae Seido then presented advancements in vitrification methods, while Prof. Oktay Kutluk Han shared innovative strategies to enhance the longevity and success of ovarian tissue transplantation.

 

Session Two delved into technical challenges and emerging solutions. Dr. Wang Tianren shared her insights on cryopreservation-induced damage in ovarian tissue, Prof. Zeng Haitao highlighted the potential of in vitro maturation for fertility preservation, and Prof. Liu Kui discussed breakthroughs in activating small preantral follicles in vitro.

 


The second day began with a welcome address by Prof. Ng Hung Yu Ernest, followed by a dynamic morning session. Prof. Anderson Richard opened with a discussion on gaps in female fertility post-cancer, while Prof. Rodriguez-Wallberg Kenny shared insights on establishing fertility preservation clinics. Prof. Oktay Kutluk Han addressed the safety and advancements in ovarian transplantation for cancer patients, and Prof. Suzuki Nao explored fertility preservation in borderline ovarian tumours and oncologists' perspectives. Dr. Cheng Wai Tsoi Frankie highlighted integrating fertility preservation into pediatric oncology care, and Dr. Tung Yuet Ling Joanna discussed counselling approaches for young cancer patients.

 

The afternoon session featured Prof. Ng Hung Yu Ernest on ovarian stimulation protocols, followed by Prof. Rodriguez-Wallberg Kenny advocating for randomised trials on GnRHa drugs for ovarian protection. Prof. Anderson Richard expanded the scope to non-cancer conditions requiring fertility preservation. Regional perspectives were then presented, including an introduction by Dr. Haththotuwa Rohana (AOFOG Secretary General), Prof. Wiweko Budi on challenges in Asia, and Prof. Ko Ka Yee Jennifer on Hong Kong’s progress. Dr. Ahmad Mohd Faizal emphasised quality control in fertility programs, and Prof. Tse Ka Yu concluded with fertility-sparing surgical techniques.

 

The workshop ended in a closing ceremony, marking a successful exchange of knowledge and collaboration in advancing fertility preservation globally.
