Consequently, the accumulation of these malignant cells compromises immune defence, oxygen transport, and haemostasis.4

Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML): A fast-growing leukaemia affecting myeloid cells. AML is one of the most common forms of acute leukaemia in adults.

Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL): A slowly progressing leukaemia that affects lymphocytes and is most commonly diagnosed in older adults (aged 60 to 70).

Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML): A chronic leukaemia characterised by the abnormal growth of myeloid cells and often associated with a specific genetic abnormality known as the Philadelphia chromosome.

• Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors (TKIs) revolutionised the management of CML by directly targeting the abnormal BCR-ABL protein.11

• FLT3 and IDH Inhibitors: These targeted agents are used for specific genetic mutations commonly found in AML patients.12


Immunotherapy and Cellular Therapies

These treatments harness the patient’s own immune system to recognise and destroy leukaemia cells:

• CAR T-Cell Therapy: A landmark advancement where a patient’s T-cells are genetically engineered to attack cancer cells.13

• Monoclonal Antibodies and Bispecific T-cell Engagers (BiTEs): These drugs act as bridging agents, binding simultaneously to cancer cells and immune cells to trigger targeted destruction.14


Stem Cell Transplantation

This procedure replaces diseased, leukaemia-ridden bone marrow with healthy, blood-forming stem cells. For some patients, a stem cell or bone marrow transplant offers the possibility of long-term disease control or cure. These traditional treatments remain fundamental foundational pillars, especially for fast-growing acute leukaemias. Central nervous system prophylaxis delivers chemotherapy directly into the spinal fluid (intrathecal chemotherapy) to prevent leukaemia from spreading to the brain.15
